Haptic Heartbeat explores the design of synchronized, multi-sensory experiences - combining haptic vibrations, audio, and visuals to create a powerful physical focal point.
Early in our exploration of haptics as a form of guidance for breth, we began synchronizing our test rig with music. Bass-heavy tracks revealed something unexpected: the vibrations were silent, but deeply impactful. The vibrations created an immediate, immersive connection - something both grounding and compelling...and unfortunately, difficult to explain, but immediately understood when experiencing it in-person.
Recognizing the potential, I proposed a series of meditative experiences within the product. Designed to help users reset by anchoring attention through sensation rather than instruction. To support this, we conducted extensive testing using a modular haptic test rig developed by Jason Palm and Dylan Scott, allowing us to experiment with different actuators, explore existing haptic libraries, and design our own patterns.
Audio to Feeling
Audio waveforms were created and refined in Audacity, then translated into signals for the haptic test rig. Allowing us to shape the synchronization between what is heard and felt.
Exploring Sensation
A modular test rig enabled rapid testing of different actuator types, producing a wide range of sensations - from sharp, alert feedback to slow, soothing pulses.
Visualizing the Heartbeat
The heartbeat visual mirrors the placement of the device’s top and bottom haptics, while referencing an infinity loop. Reinforcing rhythm, continuity, and flow.
From System to Experience
Using a shared set of design primitives, I created two distinct experiences: one centered on a slowing heartbeat to promote calm, and another designed to build energy and refocus.
One of the most resonant discoveries was the similarity between a Risset rhythm and a heartbeat. The sensation was instantly familiar—calming, steady, and deeply human.
Building on this, I developed two complementary experiences: one focused purely on a haptic heartbeat that gradually slows over time, guiding the body toward a state of calm, and another pairing this rhythm with an audio composition designed to re-energize and refocus.
For Heart Rise, I designed a layered, time-based audio composition that builds into a monumental rise. Introducing warm textures and deep bass before gradually stripping back complexity. When synchronized with haptic vibrations, the result is a focused, energizing experience.

This project stands out as one of the most memorable experiences I’ve worked on. The response from people who try it is immediate - there is a sense of surprise, followed by calm, curiosity, and a desire to return to it.
What’s been especially meaningful is seeing how it fits into real routines. One user begins each workday with it; another brought it into a classroom where it quickly became something every student wanted to experience.
Whether it’s the slowing Heartbeat becoming part of a bedtime ritual, or Heart Rise helping set the tone for the day, the synchronized experience creates a strong physical anchor - something you feel, not just follow.
This project gave me the opportunity to work across sound design, creative direction, animation, and the technical shaping of haptic waveforms. Bringing those elements together into a cohesive, multi-sensory experience is something I’m deeply proud of.
